The sad thing is when you reach max level, without the expansions any experience you earn is wasted. With expansions your experience goes to a chosen mastery instead. But without them, it just goes nowhere. Personally when i max leveled my 2 characters, i wanted more and bought the game. When no mastery track is leveling up, you earn spirit shards.
It is harder, though, a lot more challenging content at level cap and in the exps. The experience of 1-80 is the game, level cap is just more of that, but mobs use a lot more CC and hit harder. However, there is a simple solution to your perceived dilemma. Do what I did, and level alts.
